Mr. Dewey Winfree age 72 of the Hiwassee Community died at 1 p.m. Monday afternoon October 7, 2019 at the Smith County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage where he had been cared for since September 11, 2019.
Funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home were conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon October 10th with Eld. Austin Henderson officiating. Burial followed with full military honors in the Winfree family lot in the Garden of Gethsemane at Smith County Memorial Gardens.
Born Dewey Estes Winfree in the Hiwassee Community on May 3, 1947, he was one of three sons of the late Crockett Robbins Winfree and Nettie Hortense Pritchett.
On June 23, 2007 at the Hermitage, he was united in marriage to Hartsville native, the former Janie Dianne Gregory. The marriage ceremony was officiated by Judge Andrew Jackson VI.
He was a member of the 1965 graduating class at Smith County High School where he was voted the “Most Dignified” boy in the class, majored in science and mathematics, was a member of the F.F.A., the debate team, the Beta Club, the junior play cast, the parliamentary procedure team his sophomore year and his senior year was a member of the Owl yearbook staff.
It was said of him in the annual that “He is a man of splendid abilities” dignified and vigilant and possessed keen mental judgement.
He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor Degree in Accounting.
Mr. Winfree proudly served our country with the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict.
He was retired from the Tennessee Department of Revenue with thirty-one years of service and where he was Director of Special Investigations.
Following retirement he enjoyed operating his cattle farm in the HiwassEe Community.
Mr. Winfree was a member of the Knob Springs Missionary Baptist Church in the Hiwassee Community.
Surviving in addition to his wife of over twelve years is a step-son, Adam Carder and wife Nikki of Marietta, Georgia, two step-grandchildren, Jonah and Lula Belle Carder; two brothers, Harold Winfree and Jimmy Winfree; mother-in-law, Dot Towns Gregory of Hartsville; sister-in-law, Kathy Gregory Whitten of Murfreesboro and her children, Austin Henderson and wife Nicole, Chase Henderson and wife Krystle.
The family has requested memorials to Kindred Hospice or Trousdale Historical Society.
