Mr. Marvin Givens, age 81 of Carthage and a long-time resident of the Highland Community, died at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, August 28, 2019 at the Sumner Regional Medical Center.
Services were conducted on Saturday morning, August 31, from the Hackett Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home with Bro. Jeff Burton officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
Born Marvin Lee Givens in Elmwood on March 11, 1938, he was the youngest child and only son of Waymon Carl Givens and Minnie Ethel Givens Givens. Four sisters preceded him in death, Anna Ruth Givens who died May 8, 1996 at the age of 64, Margaret Givens who died June 23, 2005 at the age of 72, Gladys Givens who died September 16, 2005 at the age of 70, and Willie Mai Givens Woodard who died July 10, 2006 at the age of 77.
Mr. Givens entered into the United States Army at Fort Benning, Georgia on September 14, 1961 and was Honorably discharged at Fort Eustis, Virginia on September 13, 1963 with the rank of Specialist 4th Class.
He was a long-time employee of the Tennessee Valley Authority and later worked with the Montgomery Electric Service.
He was Missionary Baptist in belief.
Surviving are his niece, Dorris Reese & husband James of Cedar Hill; a great-nephew, Richard Huffines & wife Tracy of White House; a great-nephew, Tammie Jones & husband Bobby of Coopertown.
